8,000 steps a day is the ideal number to avoid premature death. The idea of walking 10,000 steps a day originated in Japan in the 1960s but had no scientific basis. An international study led by the University of Granada has provided the first scientific evidence of how many steps need to be taken per day to significantly reduce the risk of premature death: 8,000.
Researchers also showed that the pace at which we walk brings additional benefits, and that it is better to walk fast than slow. Regarding the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, most benefits are observed at around 7,000 steps.
